Csound 7.0.0 Released!

We are thrilled to announce the official release of Csound 7.0.0, a major milestone in the evolution of the Csound sound and music computing system!

Csound 7 brings deep language modernizations, a cleaner and more expressive syntax, a refactored host API, and expanded platform support while preserving backward compatibility for existing Csound orchestras and scores.

Highlights in Csound 7.0

  • Explicit Variable Typing & Flexible Naming: Variables are no longer restricted to single-letter prefixes (i, k, a) to determine their rate. You can now use explicit colon type annotations such as freq:i = 440 or sig:a = vco2(0.2, freq).
  • User-Defined Structs & Struct Arrays: Define custom struct data types to group parameters and pass structured data cleanly across instruments and opcodes.
  • Modernized User-Defined Opcodes (UDOs): Define UDOs with function-style signatures opcode MyFilter(in:a, cf:k):(a) and pass-by-reference semantics.
  • Generalized Loops & Conditionals: Enhanced for loops, boolean constants, and boolean functions inside conditional expressions.
  • Refactored Host & UGen APIs: A modernized C/C++ API, PEP 8 compliant Python bindings (ctcsound), per-k-cycle debugger callbacks in WebAssembly, and a new UGen API.
  • Desktop, Mobile, Web & Embedded Builds: Official release packages for macOS, Windows (x64, ARM64, i386), Linux, Android, iOS, plus embedded targets including ESP32 (S3/P4) and ARM Cortex-M7.
